What it does, concretely

Working on a Word document, an Excel spreadsheet, or a PowerPoint presentation often means tedious back-and-forth between the application and an external assistant. Claude for Office integrates a Claude panel directly into these three Microsoft applications, without leaving the usual work environment.

In practice, a side panel opens inside Excel, Word, or PowerPoint. Claude can read the content of the active document, answer questions about it, suggest rewrites, generate text, or analyze data. Context is shared across all three applications, so switching between them does not break the conversation.

This tool is aimed at people who already use Microsoft 365 daily and who have a paid Claude subscription. It is particularly suited to those looking for an alternative to Copilot while staying within their Office environment.

It is not suitable for users on the free Claude plan, nor for those working with documents containing sensitive information they do not wish to share with Anthropic.

How to install Claude for Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

1. Make sure you have an active paid Claude subscription (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise) at claude.com. 2. Open Excel, Word, or PowerPoint from your Microsoft 365 suite. 3. Go to the "Insert" tab, then "Add-ins" in the Microsoft application. 4. Search for "Claude" in the Microsoft add-in store and select the official Anthropic plugin. 5. Sign in with your Anthropic account to activate the side panel. 6. Caution: do not leave the panel active when working on documents containing confidential data, as their content is sent to Anthropic.
