In practice, a 'Summarize this email' button appears at the top of long threads on both mobile and web. The 'Help Me Write' feature helps turn rough notes into a polished email, with options to rephrase, expand, or shorten the text.
Gemini in Gmail is aimed at Gmail users who receive a high volume of messages and want to save time on reading and writing, without switching tools. Basic features (summaries, short reply suggestions) are available for free in the US; advanced features such as the full side panel, Help Me Write, and in-depth proofreading require a paid subscription.
