Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

Running multiple coding agents in parallel in a standard terminal creates a concrete problem: notifications are generic, tabs pile up without context, and you have to juggle windows to know which agent is waiting for a response. cmux addresses this by adding a visibility layer directly inside the terminal.

cmux is built on libghostty, the rendering engine behind the Ghostty terminal, and developed natively in Swift and AppKit. It reads your existing Ghostty configuration for themes, fonts, and colors. Each workspace has vertical tabs in a sidebar showing the git branch, working directory, listening ports, and the latest notification text. When an agent needs attention, the relevant pane gets a blue ring and the tab lights up in the sidebar.

The built-in browser can be opened as a split pane next to the terminal. It exposes a scriptable API that lets agents navigate, snapshot the accessibility tree, click, fill forms, and evaluate JavaScript. The entire terminal is also controllable via a CLI and socket API: creating workspaces, sending keystrokes, reading screen contents, and taking screenshots.

cmux is aimed at developers running multiple coding agents in parallel on Mac who want to stay in control of their environment without relying on a closed graphical orchestrator. It is not suited for Windows or Linux users, nor for those looking for a general-purpose terminal with no connection to AI agents.

What it offers

  • ·Vertical tabs in a sidebar showing git branch, working directory, listening ports, and latest notification text for each workspace.
  • ·Visual notification rings around panes and sidebar badges when an agent needs attention, with Cmd+Shift+U shortcut to jump to the most recent unread notification.
  • ·Scriptable built-in browser as a split pane, able to navigate, snapshot the DOM, click, fill forms, and evaluate JavaScript from agents.
  • ·CLI and socket API to create workspaces, split panes, send keystrokes, read screen contents, and control the browser programmatically.
  • ·Native SSH support via the cmux ssh command: the built-in browser routes through the remote network and images dragged into the session are transferred via scp.
  • ·Session restore on relaunch: window layout, working directories, terminal scrollback, and browser URL are saved automatically.
  • ·Claude Code Teams support via cmux claude-teams, which launches teammate agents as native splits without requiring tmux.
  • ·Cookie, history, and session import from Chrome, Firefox, Arc, and 20+ browsers so the built-in browser starts authenticated.

How to install cmux

1. Download the cmux-macos.dmg file from the GitHub releases page or from the official website. 2. Open the .dmg file and drag cmux to your Applications folder. 3. On first launch, macOS may ask you to confirm opening an app from an identified developer: click Open. 4. Install agent hooks after setting up the relevant agent CLIs: run cmux hooks setup in the terminal to enable notifications and session resume. 5. Security note: the browser and terminal can be controlled by agents via CLI and socket; only grant access to trusted agents.
brew tap manaflow-ai/cmux && brew install --cask cmux
