What it does, concretely

Coordinating multiple AI agents on a complex task is challenging: each agent needs to know what it does, in what order, and how to pass its work to the next one. CrewAI addresses this by providing a Python framework that organizes teams of agents around defined roles, goals, and precise tasks.

In practice, CrewAI relies on two complementary mechanisms. Crews group autonomous agents that collaborate freely according to their roles, while Flows let you build event-driven action sequences with conditional logic and precise execution control. Both can be combined within the same project.

The tool is primarily aimed at Python developers who want to automate complex business processes, prototype agents, or deploy workflows in production. More than 100,000 developers have completed CrewAI's certified training courses, and the tool is used by 65% of Fortune 500 companies according to the official website.

However, CrewAI is not suited for people without Python knowledge: there is no consumer-facing graphical interface for building agents from scratch without writing code. Advanced governance, observability, and managed deployment features require subscribing to the commercial AMP Suite offering.

What it offers

  • ·Creation of agent teams (Crews) with custom roles, goals, and backstories for each agent.
  • ·Building event-driven workflows (Flows) with conditional branching and state management between steps.
  • ·Support for multiple language models configured per agent, allowing the right model to be chosen for each task.
  • ·Structured task system with outputs defined in JSON or via Pydantic, with optional human review before moving to the next step.
  • ·Addition of custom tools in a dedicated folder, referenceable directly from agent configuration.
  • ·Real-time tracing of every LLM call, tool call, and memory read, with full cost accounting (paid).
  • ·Role-based access control, immutable audit trails, and human approval gates during execution (paid).
  • ·On-premise or cloud deployment with advanced governance and security options via the AMP Suite (paid).

How to install CrewAI

1. Check that Python 3.10 to 3.13 is installed: python3 --version 2. Install the uv package manager (macOS/Linux: curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh; Windows: powershell -ExecutionPolicy ByPass -c "irm https://astral.sh/uv/install.ps1 | iex") 3. Install the CrewAI CLI: uv tool install crewai 4. Verify the installation: uv tool list (you should see crewai with its version number) 5. Create your first project: crewai create crew project_name, then add your API keys to the generated .env file 6. Security note: never share the .env file containing your API keys; add it to your .gitignore before any commit.
