What it does, concretely

Working with Word, Excel, PowerPoint or PDF files from an AI agent requires precise, repeatable instructions. These four official Anthropic skills address this need by teaching Claude how to read, create and modify each of these formats in a structured way.

Each skill is a self-contained folder containing a SKILL.md file with instructions and metadata. Once installed via Claude Code, they activate automatically as soon as you mention a document-related task: extracting fields from a PDF, generating an Excel table, formatting a PowerPoint presentation or drafting a Word document.

These skills are aimed at developers and advanced users working in Claude Code who want to automate repetitive document tasks, or who want to understand how to build their own complex skills using a production example as a reference.

They are not suited to someone looking for a simple graphical interface or who is not comfortable with a command-line environment. The behaviours obtained may also differ from what the instruction files describe, as the GitHub repository explicitly notes.

Our tips

To install all four document skills in a single operation, use the command /plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills in Claude Code.
Once the plugin is installed, simply mention the desired format in your message to activate the corresponding skill, for example: "Use the PDF skill to extract the form fields from this file."
Browse the SKILL.md files in the GitHub repository to understand the internal structure of skills and draw inspiration for building your own document automations.
If you use Claude.ai on a paid plan, these skills are already available without any additional installation.
Always test skills thoroughly in your own environment before relying on them for critical tasks, as actual behaviours may differ from the described instructions.
