In practice, the app offers short game-like lessons, a daily streak system to maintain motivation, and three distinct AI features: Video Call (a simulated video call with the character Lily, unscripted and adaptive to the learner's level), Roleplay (everyday scenario practice with AI feedback on accuracy and complexity), and Explain My Answer (grammar explanations after mistakes, made free for most courses in 2026). These AI features are powered by GPT-4-class models.
Duolingo Max suits learners who already enjoy Duolingo and want to weave conversation practice into their existing routine without switching apps. It is particularly well suited to beginner and intermediate learners looking to build spoken confidence in the languages covered by the AI features (English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean depending on platform).
However, Duolingo Max is not designed for advanced learners targeting academic or professional fluency, nor for those who need precise pronunciation scoring, as the app does not offer it. Users learning a language not covered by the AI features will not have access to Video Call or Roleplay.
