Claude's learning mode that guides users through questions instead of giving the answer.
The most strictly Socratic of the three learning modes.
What it does, concretely
Many users get a complete answer from Claude within seconds, which solves the immediate problem but short-circuits genuine learning. Learning Mode exists to correct this reflex: instead of providing the solution, Claude asks questions that guide the user toward finding it themselves.
In practice, the mode is activated from the style selector in the Claude.ai input bar by choosing "Learning" from the dropdown menu. Once active, Claude adopts the Socratic method for the entire conversation: if you submit a calculus problem, it asks what approach you would try first; if you present an argument, it asks what evidence supports your claim. The mode stays on until you manually switch it off.
This mode is aimed at students preparing for exams, self-learners who want to genuinely understand a subject rather than copy an answer, and teachers looking for an interactive exploration tool for their students. It works equally well for reviewing course material or approaching a brand-new skill from scratch.
However, it is not suited to quick factual lookups: the back-and-forth of questions unnecessarily slows down retrieving simple information. Users who need a direct, immediate answer will find the mode frustrating in that context.
