Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

Traditional search engines return links ranked by popularity, which is poorly suited to AI agents that need dense, relevant content. Exa Search addresses this by offering a semantic search API built on embeddings, designed from the ground up to be consumed by programs rather than humans.

In practice, you send a natural language query to the API, and Exa returns results with condensed extracts (highlights) or full text, depending on your needs. Several search modes are available: from instant search in 250 ms for real-time applications, to deep reasoning search in 12 to 40 seconds for complex research tasks.

The tool targets developers building agents, chatbots, or automated information processing pipelines. Specialized indexes cover more than one billion people profiles, 50 million companies, and 350 million scientific publications, allowing precise targeting of the relevant retrieval surface.

However, Exa is not suited for general public use without technical skills: access is exclusively through an API, with possible integration into LangChain or via the MCP protocol. A user who simply wants to search the web without coding will not find it useful.

What it offers

  • ·Embedding-based semantic search for results tailored to AI agents.
  • ·Multiple search modes depending on desired speed and depth: auto, instant, fast, deep-lite, deep, deep-reasoning.
  • ·Condensed content extraction (highlights) that is 10 times more token-efficient than full text.
  • ·Structured JSON output via a customizable output schema (output_schema).
  • ·Specialized indexes: over one billion people, 50 million companies, 350 million scientific publications.
  • ·Result filtering by domain, path prefix, or subdomain.
  • ·Native integration with LangChain and the MCP protocol.
  • ·SDKs available in Python and JavaScript for quick onboarding.

How to install Exa Search

1. Create an account on the Exa dashboard (dashboard.exa.ai) and retrieve your API key. 2. Store the key in an environment variable (EXA_API_KEY) rather than hardcoding it in your code, to avoid accidental exposure. 3. Install the SDK for your language: pip install exa-py for Python, npm install exa-js for JavaScript. 4. Use the dashboard onboarding tool to generate an integration snippet tailored to your stack and use case. 5. Paste the generated code into your project and customize it as needed.
pip install exa-py
