Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

Managing sensitive personal or professional notes with an AI assistant raises a privacy concern: most tools send your text to remote servers. Local GPT solves this by running artificial intelligence entirely on your own machine, with no external connection.

In practice, the plugin integrates into Obsidian and relies on a local AI provider, typically Ollama. Simply select text in a note to bring up a context menu offering predefined actions: summarize, fix spelling, find action items, continue writing, or use the text as a free prompt. An Action Palette also lets you run a one-time action without any prior selection.

The plugin suits people who take notes in Obsidian and want AI assistance without compromising data privacy: journalists, healthcare professionals, lawyers, researchers, or anyone who values digital privacy.

It is less suited to users who are not comfortable installing technical tools like Ollama, or to those looking for a ready-to-use solution with no prior configuration.

What it offers

  • ·Context menu on selected text to trigger an AI action in a few clicks.
  • ·Action Palette to run a free prompt without any prior text selection.
  • ·Built-in default actions: summarize, fix spelling and grammar, find action items, continue writing, general help.
  • ·Image analysis directly from your notes, using a compatible model (e.g. bakllava via Ollama).
  • ·Context from links, backlinks, and PDF files to enrich responses (RAG).
  • ·Community action library installable and automatically updated from the plugin settings.
  • ·Custom action creation with a tailored system prompt.
  • ·Interface available in French and ten other languages.

How to install Local GPT (Obsidian)

1. Install Obsidian on your machine if you have not already done so. 2. In Obsidian, open Settings, go to Community Plugins, and search for 'Local GPT' to install it. 3. Also install the 'AI Providers' plugin from the same store: it is required to configure your AI provider. 4. Install Ollama on your machine (ollama.com) and download the model of your choice, for example: ollama pull orca-mini. 5. Configure the connection to Ollama in the AI Providers plugin settings by following its instructions. 6. No data leaves your machine: make sure you are not using a remote provider in AI Providers to maintain full privacy.
