Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

The vast majority of enterprise data is locked in scanned documents, PDFs, or images. Extracting it manually is slow, costly, and error-prone. Mistral OCR is a dedicated API for automated document reading: it converts each page into structured text, ready to be used by a program or a search engine.

In practice, you send a PDF file, an image, or a URL to the /v1/ocr endpoint. The API returns, page by page, Markdown-enriched text, HTML-reconstructed tables, bounding box coordinates for each block, a block-type classification (title, table, equation, signature, etc.), and a per-word confidence score. All in a single API call, with no additional steps.

This tool is aimed at developers and technical teams who need to ingest large volumes of documents: invoices, forms, scientific papers, contracts, scanned archives. It is also well suited for teams building RAG pipelines or enterprise search engines.

It is not suitable for organizations whose data is subject to strict regulations (healthcare, regulated finance) and who cannot use an external cloud service without documented SOC2, HIPAA, or FedRAMP certifications. For these cases, Mistral offers a self-hosting option in a single container, available through their sales team.

What it offers

  • ·Structured Markdown text extraction from PDFs, images (PNG, JPEG, AVIF), and office formats (DOC, PPT, OpenDocument), in 170 languages across 10 language groups. (paid)
  • ·Paragraph-level bounding boxes: each extracted text block comes with its spatial coordinates on the page, useful for in-context highlighting and redaction. (paid)
  • ·Block classification into 13 structural types: title, header, footer, table, equation, list, signature, image, caption, code, paragraph, references, and more. (paid)
  • ·Inline confidence scores at the page and word level, to support human-in-the-loop verification and quality control pipelines. (paid)
  • ·Complex table reconstruction in HTML with merged cell support (colspan/rowspan), preserving column hierarchies. (paid)
  • ·Batch processing via the Batch API, with a 50% price reduction ($2 per 1,000 pages instead of $4). (paid)
  • ·Structured annotations via JSON Schema: define a schema to extract structured data from the entire document or from each individual bounding box. (paid)
  • ·No-code interface via Document AI in Mistral Studio: drag and drop a PDF to get clean text or structured JSON, without writing a single line of code. (paid)

How to install OCR (Mistral)

1. Create an account at console.mistral.ai and generate an API key in the billing section (paid account required). 2. Create an isolated Python environment: python3 -m venv .venv && source .venv/bin/activate 3. Install the official SDK: pip install mistralai 4. Store your key in a .env file (MISTRAL_API_KEY=your_key) and add .env to your .gitignore to avoid exposing it. 5. Initialize the client and call the OCR endpoint: from mistralai import Mistral; client = Mistral(api_key=os.environ['MISTRAL_API_KEY']); response = client.ocr.process(model='mistral-ocr-latest', document={'type': 'document_url', 'document_url': 'https://...'}). 6. Read the result page by page via response.pages[0].markdown.
pip install mistralai
