Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

Reading an article in English, drafting an email in German, or understanding a page in Japanese often means juggling tabs and applications. The DeepL extension solves this by bringing translation and writing assistance directly into the browser, without ever leaving the current page.

In practice, you simply select text on any web page and click the floating DeepL icon (or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Y on Windows, Shift+Cmd+Y on Mac) to get a translation in a small, draggable window. The same logic applies to writing: select text you are drafting and the extension offers rephrasing and style suggestions. Pro users can also trigger automatic full-page translation with a single click.

The extension is aimed at anyone who regularly reads or writes in multiple languages: researchers, professionals dealing with foreign partners, students, or curious individuals. It covers 30+ languages for translation and 5+ languages for writing assistance.

It is less suited to users who need to translate large volumes of documents or files, or who want to manage complex glossaries with many entries: these use cases require a Pro plan and, for teams, a dedicated subscription.

What it offers

  • ·Instant translation of selected text on any web page, displayed in a small, draggable floating window.
  • ·Writing assistance and rephrasing of text being typed, with style and tone suggestions, directly in the input field.
  • ·Full-page translation with a single click (paid).
  • ·Application of a custom glossary to ensure terminology consistency in translations (paid).
  • ·Native integrations with Gmail, Google Docs, Google Slides, LinkedIn, YouTube, WhatsApp Web, and X, without leaving those platforms.
  • ·Customizable keyboard shortcuts to trigger translation or writing assistance without using the mouse.
  • ·Floating icon that can be enabled or disabled site by site from the extension settings.
  • ·Target language changeable at any time in the extension settings.

How to install DeepL extension

1. Go to the Chrome Web Store, the Microsoft Edge Add-ons page, or the Firefox Add-ons page depending on your browser, and search for "DeepL". 2. Click "Add to Chrome" (or "Add to Edge" / "Add to Firefox") and read the requested permissions before accepting: the extension only accesses the text you select. 3. Once the extension is added, pin it to the toolbar via your browser's extensions icon to keep it one click away. 4. Click the DeepL icon in the toolbar, then log in to your DeepL account to activate the features included in your plan. 5. Check in the settings (gear icon) that the target language is set to the one you want. 6. Select any text on a web page and click the floating icon or use the keyboard shortcut to perform your first translation.
