Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

Feeding web content into a language model is often cumbersome: raw HTML is cluttered with tags, scripts, and noise that degrade response quality. Jina Reader solves this by extracting the main content from a URL and converting it into clean, LLM-friendly text for RAG or agent systems.

In practice, you simply prepend any URL with r.jina.ai/ to get a cleaned Markdown version of the page. For web search, the prefix s.jina.ai/?q= returns the top five results with their content, also in structured text. Images are automatically captioned by a vision model, and PDFs are natively supported.

Jina Reader targets developers building RAG pipelines, web agents, or document analysis tools. It is designed as API infrastructure, not a consumer search engine: the user chooses which URLs to process and is responsible for how the output is used.

It is not suited for those looking for a visual interface or a no-code turnkey tool. Users without an API key face strict rate limits, and some advanced features consume significantly more tokens.

What it offers

  • ·URL-to-clean-Markdown conversion via the simple r.jina.ai/ prefix.
  • ·Web search returning the top five results in structured text via s.jina.ai/?q=.
  • ·Native PDF reading, including documents with many images.
  • ·Automatic image captioning using a built-in vision language model.
  • ·CSS selector targeting to extract only a specific part of a page.
  • ·High-quality HTML-to-Markdown conversion via ReaderLM-v2 for complex pages (costs 3x more tokens).
  • ·MCP server available at mcp.jina.ai to integrate the API into LLM agents.
  • ·EU data residency option for sensitive requests (experimental).
