Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

AI agents, chatbots, and augmented search engines need real-time web data to reduce hallucinations and ground their responses in reliable sources. Brave Search API addresses this need by exposing an independent, user-tracking-free index that can be consumed directly by third-party applications.

In practice, the API offers several specialized endpoints: standard web search (URLs, text, news, images), context optimized for language models (LLM Context), synthesized answers with citations (Answers), as well as dedicated endpoints for images, videos, suggestions, and spell-checking. The index covers more than 30 billion pages, updated at a rate of over 100 million page updates per day.

Brave Search API is aimed at developers and technical teams integrating web search into RAG pipelines, coding assistants, CRM tools, educational applications, or financial assistants. It is compatible with the OpenAI SDK and integrates natively as an MCP server for applications using Claude.

However, it is not suited for non-technical users looking for a consumer search engine, nor for projects requiring very high query volumes without a dedicated budget, since there is no longer a fully free tier beyond the included monthly credits.

What it offers

  • ·Real-time web search with complete results: URLs, text, news, images, and enriched metadata.
  • ·LLM Context endpoint: provides up to five snippets per page, selected in real time to maximize contextual relevance.
  • ·Answers endpoint: generates synthesized answers with citations, compatible with the OpenAI SDK and available via streaming (paid).
  • ·Search Goggles: allows reranking or filtering results according to custom rules (paid).
  • ·Specialized endpoints: images, videos, news, suggestions, spell-checking, and local search.
  • ·Schema-enriched results: formatted data for popular formats such as movie reviews and wikis (paid).
  • ·Native MCP server: direct integration for Claude-based applications.
  • ·Enterprise plan with zero data retention, custom agreements, and dedicated support (paid).

How to install Brave Search API

1. Create an account at brave.com/search/api/ and log in. 2. Generate an API key from your dashboard (under "Log in / sign up"). 3. Store this key securely: it grants access to your billable quota and must not be exposed in public code. 4. Add the key in the HTTP header X-Subscription-Token for each request to https://api.search.brave.com/res/v1/. 5. Choose the endpoint suited to your use case: /web/search for standard search, /llm/context for LLM context, or /answers for synthesized answers. 6. If you are using Claude, configure the Brave Search MCP server for native integration.
