Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

Obsidian vaults grow quickly: hundreds of notes accumulate and ideas captured weeks ago stay buried when they would be most useful. Smart Connections solves this by automatically surfacing notes that are semantically related to the one you are currently working on, without requiring a search query or manual linking.

The plugin ships with a local embedding model that indexes the vault immediately after installation, with no API key or prior configuration needed. A Connections view displays in real time the notes related to the current note, along with a similarity score. A Lookup view lets you run a semantic search from a free-form question, independently of the open note.

Smart Connections is aimed at Obsidian users who manage large numbers of notes: researchers, writers, students, or anyone who wants to retrieve past research without spending time organising it. The plugin also works on mobile.

It is less suited to those who do not use Obsidian, or who are looking for an assistant capable of editing their notes or generating content: Smart Connections is limited to suggesting connections and does not touch note content.

What it offers

  • ·Connections view: displays in real time the notes semantically related to the current note, with a similarity score.
  • ·Lookup view: runs a semantic search across the entire vault from a free-form question.
  • ·Local embedding indexing: no API key required, all processing stays on the device.
  • ·Drag and drop: drag a result directly into a note to create a link.
  • ·Random connection: opens a strongly connected note chosen at random from the current note's connections.
  • ·Pause updates: freezes the Connections view on a specific note while you navigate the vault.
  • ·Inline connections in the editor: note suggestions while writing (paid).
  • ·Integration with Obsidian Bases to combine semantic context with note database workflows (paid).
