Brave Search API
Tool : A precise action the AI can call · requires brave-api
Independent index, no tracking.
The independent choice; no more free tier.
Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.
What it does, concretely
AI agents, chatbots, and augmented search engines need real-time web data to reduce hallucinations and ground their responses in reliable sources. Brave Search API addresses this need by exposing an independent, user-tracking-free index that can be consumed directly by third-party applications.
In practice, the API offers several specialized endpoints: standard web search (URLs, text, news, images), context optimized for language models (LLM Context), synthesized answers with citations (Answers), as well as dedicated endpoints for images, videos, suggestions, and spell-checking. The index covers more than 30 billion pages, updated at a rate of over 100 million page updates per day.
Brave Search API is aimed at developers and technical teams integrating web search into RAG pipelines, coding assistants, CRM tools, educational applications, or financial assistants. It is compatible with the OpenAI SDK and integrates natively as an MCP server for applications using Claude.
However, it is not suited for non-technical users looking for a consumer search engine, nor for projects requiring very high query volumes without a dedicated budget, since there is no longer a fully free tier beyond the included monthly credits.
