Yuka
Tool : standalone product, used directly
Scan of food and cosmetic products with health evaluation.
The most widely used scanning app in Europe, French-made and with no data reselling.
What it does, concretely
Reading the labels on food and cosmetic products takes time and requires knowledge that most consumers simply do not have. Yuka addresses this problem by instantly translating that information into a clear health score.
In practice, you just point your phone's camera at a product's barcode. The app immediately analyses the composition and displays a score out of 100, along with a breakdown of positive and negative points: additives, salt and fat levels, endocrine disruptors, allergens, carcinogens or irritants, depending on whether the product is a food item or a cosmetic.
Yuka is aimed at anyone who wants to make more informed choices while shopping, without having to decode complex ingredient lists on their own. The app also suggests better-rated alternatives when a product scores poorly.
It will be less useful for someone who does not buy barcoded products, such as loose fresh fruit and vegetables, or who is not concerned with the nutritional or cosmetic composition of their purchases.
