OCR (Mistral)
Tool : A precise action the AI can call · requires mistral-api
Structured reading of scanned documents in 170 languages, with positions and confidence scores.
The best price-to-accuracy ratio for document ingestion.
Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.
What it does, concretely
The vast majority of enterprise data is locked in scanned documents, PDFs, or images. Extracting it manually is slow, costly, and error-prone. Mistral OCR is a dedicated API for automated document reading: it converts each page into structured text, ready to be used by a program or a search engine.
In practice, you send a PDF file, an image, or a URL to the /v1/ocr endpoint. The API returns, page by page, Markdown-enriched text, HTML-reconstructed tables, bounding box coordinates for each block, a block-type classification (title, table, equation, signature, etc.), and a per-word confidence score. All in a single API call, with no additional steps.
This tool is aimed at developers and technical teams who need to ingest large volumes of documents: invoices, forms, scientific papers, contracts, scanned archives. It is also well suited for teams building RAG pipelines or enterprise search engines.
It is not suitable for organizations whose data is subject to strict regulations (healthcare, regulated finance) and who cannot use an external cloud service without documented SOC2, HIPAA, or FedRAMP certifications. For these cases, Mistral offers a self-hosting option in a single container, available through their sales team.
