SpectraLayers 12 (Steinberg)
App : A product you use directly
Spectral editing with AI-powered separation and restoration, as an ARA plugin or standalone application.
The most precise tool for repairing and untangling a recording.
Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.
What it does, concretely
An audio recording can suffer from many flaws: background noise, plosives, voices mixed with music, instruments buried in a mix. SpectraLayers 12 addresses these problems by representing sound as visual objects in a spectrogram, enabling intervention with sample-accurate precision.
In practice, the tool offers AI-powered modules to separate a mix into independent layers (vocals, bass, drums, effects, dialogue), repair degraded speech, remove plosives, or reduce noise. All operations can now be applied to multiple layers simultaneously, either in standalone mode or directly inside an ARA 2-compatible DAW such as Cubase or Nuendo.
SpectraLayers 12 is aimed at sound engineers, post-production editors, archive restorers, and sound designers who need fine-grained control over every component of a recording. The Elements edition covers routine corrections and vocal unmixing; the Pro edition adds the most advanced modules, including Unmix Soundtrack, Unmix Instrument, Voice Enhance, and batch processing.
However, the tool is not designed for casual or occasional use: working with the spectrogram requires a learning curve, and the heaviest AI processes demand a recent machine. Users who simply want automatic background noise reduction will find simpler solutions elsewhere.
What it offers
- ·Unmix Song: separates a musical mix into independent layers (vocals, drums, bass, guitars, pianos, brass) with improved quality and fewer artefacts. (paid)
- ·Unmix Soundtrack: breaks down a soundtrack into three distinct layers (dialogue, effects, music), useful for post-production of films, trailers, and radio broadcasts. (paid)
- ·Unmix Instrument: isolates a user-identified instrument by analysing the target before unmixing. (paid)
- ·Voice Enhance: an AI module that reconstructs degraded voice recordings (clipping, limited bandwidth, excessive reverb) while preserving the speaker's identity. (paid)
- ·DePlosive: automatically removes unwanted plosives from dialogue tracks, with adjustable controls for threshold, frequency, and reduction ratio. (paid)
- ·Simultaneous multi-layer processing: all tools and modules can operate on multiple layers at once, vertically in standalone mode and horizontally in ARA mode inside Cubase or Nuendo.
- ·Batch processing with custom naming: applies modules to multiple files in a single operation, with a user-definable naming scheme. (paid)
- ·ARA 2 integration: works as a plugin directly in the Cubase, Nuendo, or Pro Tools timeline without leaving the DAW.
