code_interpreter (OpenAI)
Tool : A precise action the AI can call · requires openai-api
Executes Python in an OpenAI container, with file input and output.
Excellent for data analysis; isolated container, no network by default.
Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.
What it does, concretely
Some tasks require running actual code rather than simply generating it: complex calculations, file processing, equation solving, chart production. Code Interpreter addresses this need by allowing an OpenAI model to write and execute Python directly, without the user having to set up a local environment.
In practice, the tool integrates with OpenAI's Responses API via a 'code_interpreter' parameter. The model generates Python code, runs it in an isolated container hosted by OpenAI, reads the result, then corrects and reruns if needed. It can accept files as input and produce files or images as output.
Code Interpreter suits developers and teams building agents capable of analyzing data, solving mathematical problems, processing files in various formats, or generating visualizations. Reasoning models such as o3 and o4-mini can also use it to manipulate images.
However, this tool is not suited for use cases that require network access from within the container, or those that need execution environments other than Python. It is primarily aimed at integrators through the API, not at end users without technical skills.
What it offers
- ·Python code execution in an isolated container hosted by OpenAI (paid).
- ·Automatic code correction and re-execution on failure, until a valid result is obtained (paid).
- ·Input file processing in various formats (data, images, documents) (paid).
- ·Output file and image generation, including charts (paid).
- ·Image manipulation for reasoning models o3 and o4-mini: cropping, zooming, rotating (paid).
- ·Container memory limit configuration via the 'memory_limit' parameter (paid).
- ·Native integration with OpenAI's Responses API, with client-side support for multiple programming languages (Python, Node.js, Go, Java, Ruby) (paid).
