What it does, concretely

Inboxes are often flooded with low-priority messages that bury the emails that truly matter. SaneBox addresses this by automatically sorting incoming messages by importance, with no manual configuration required.

The service analyses email metadata (sender, subject line, date) using machine learning algorithms, then moves less important messages into dedicated folders. It works with any IMAP, Microsoft Exchange or ActiveSync account, as well as Gmail, Microsoft 365, Apple iCloud, Yahoo! Mail and Fastmail. No download is needed.

SaneBox is aimed at professionals and individuals who receive a high volume of emails daily and want to regain control of their inbox without switching email clients. A 7-day free trial is available, with no credit card required.

It is not suited to those looking for a fully free long-term solution, or to those uncomfortable with a third-party service accessing their inbox, even though SaneBox states it never stores full email content.

Our tips

Manually move a misclassified email to your inbox or to a SaneBox folder to train the algorithm to better recognise your priorities.
Use BlackHole for persistent senders you cannot easily unsubscribe from, rather than marking them as spam.
Check the Daily Digest each morning to quickly verify that nothing important was filtered by mistake, without having to browse through folders.
Use the Snooze feature to defer non-urgent emails received over the weekend so they reappear on Monday morning.
If you manage multiple email accounts, check the account limits included in each plan before subscribing.

Watch out

No permanent free plan is available: after the 7-day trial, a paid subscription is required.
The service accesses your mailbox via your credentials or OAuth, meaning you grant access to a third party, even though SaneBox states it only analyses metadata.

How to install SaneBox

1. Go to sanebox.com and click "Start Free Trial". 2. Create a SaneBox account with your email address. 3. Connect your mailbox via OAuth (recommended) or by entering your IMAP, Exchange or ActiveSync credentials. 4. SaneBox automatically creates folders in your mailbox and begins sorting, with no download or additional setup required. 5. Check the first results in the Daily Digest and correct any misclassified emails by moving them to the appropriate folder. 6. Security note: use OAuth rather than entering your password directly, and revoke access from your email account settings if you cancel.
