Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

Reading, sorting and synthesising large volumes of documents takes considerable time. NotebookLM solves this by acting as a personal research assistant: it analyses only the sources you provide and answers your questions by systematically citing the relevant passages, without inventing outside information.

In practice, you create a notebook, upload your files (PDFs, Google Docs, presentations, web pages, YouTube videos, manually pasted text) and interact via a chat interface. The tool also generates summaries, study guides, quizzes, mind maps, data tables and Audio Overviews: two-voice podcast-style discussions that can be downloaded for offline listening.

NotebookLM suits students preparing for exams, researchers handling large numbers of papers, and professionals who need to quickly master a body of internal documents. The free plan covers regular, moderate use with no credit card required.

However, the tool is not suited to users who want to query the web in real time: it operates as a closed system, limited to the sources you have loaded. It is also not recommended for highly sensitive data (trade secrets, regulated health data) on a personal account, as the contractual guarantees are weaker than those offered through a Workspace account.

What it offers

  • ·Audio Overview: generates a two-voice podcast-style discussion from your sources in one click, downloadable for offline listening.
  • ·Interactive Audio Overview mode: interrupt the discussion to ask the AI hosts a question; they answer while staying grounded in your sources (available in English only).
  • ·Video Overview: turns notebook content into a narrated video presentation with AI-generated visuals.
  • ·Content Studio: produces study guides, briefing documents, quizzes, flashcards, mind maps and data tables from your sources.
  • ·Source-grounded chat: ask questions in natural language and receive answers with citations linking back to exact passages in your documents.
  • ·Deep Research: generates in-depth research reports (10 per month on the free plan, 3 per day on Plus). (paid for extended limits)
  • ·Notebook sharing: share a notebook via link with full access or chat-only access. (paid for advanced collaboration features)
  • ·Cinematic Video Overview: animated version of the Video Overview produced with Google's Veo video model. (paid, Ultra plan only)

How to install NotebookLM

1. Go to notebooklm.google.com in a web browser (no installation required for the web version). 2. Sign in with your Google account; no credit card is required for the free plan. 3. Click "New notebook" to create your workspace. 4. Add your sources: upload PDFs, paste a URL, link a Google Doc or a YouTube video (up to 50 sources per notebook on the free plan). 5. Use the chat to ask questions or the Studio to generate an Audio Overview, a study guide or a mind map. 6. Precaution: if you are working with sensitive professional documents, sign in with your Google Workspace account rather than a personal account to benefit from stronger contractual data protections.
