Google DeepMind maps the world's forest types at global scale

Google DeepMind has produced a global map classifying every 10-meter patch of land by forest type, moving beyond simple tree-cover detection.

Google DeepMind has unveiled a global map that classifies every 10-meter patch of land by forest type, rather than simply flagging the presence of tree cover. The distinction matters: two areas showing identical levels of greenery can represent very different ecological realities, whether a tropical primary forest, a commercial plantation, a coastal mangrove, or an urban tree stand.

Previous large-scale forest monitoring efforts, popularized by tools such as Global Forest Watch, have largely relied on binary or density-based metrics: tree presence versus absence, or percentage canopy cover. That approach has enabled major progress in detecting deforestation, but it obscures ecological distinctions that matter for assessing biodiversity, carbon stocks, and a region's resilience to climate change.

By refining classification down to the level of forest type, Google DeepMind aims to deliver a more actionable resource for scientists, land managers, and policymakers. A map that separates natural forests from industrial plantations, for instance, could help target conservation and restoration efforts more precisely, and sharpen the carbon accounting figures used in international climate negotiations.

The project fits into a broader pattern of Google and DeepMind applying machine learning to Earth observation, alongside existing tools like Google Earth Engine. While the announcement does not fully detail the underlying classification model, the real value of this kind of resource will hinge on how openly it is shared with outside researchers and whether it can be updated regularly enough to serve as a reliable reference for global environmental monitoring.
