mcp-scan
App : A product you use directly
Scans your MCP servers and installed skills for tool poisoning, rug pulls, and injections.
Run it before and after every community MCP installation.
Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.
What it does, concretely
MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers and AI agent skills can contain malicious instructions hidden in tool descriptions, prompt injections, or malware payloads that are hard to spot manually. mcp-scan, now integrated into Snyk as Agent Scan, addresses the need to verify components before trusting them.
The tool automatically scans agent configuration files on the local machine (Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, Amazon Q, and others) to find MCP servers and skills. It then connects to each server, retrieves tool descriptions, and submits them to a security analysis engine that detects more than 15 distinct risk types: prompt injections, tool poisoning, tool shadowing, secret handling, suspicious downloads, and malicious code.
Agent Scan is aimed at developers and technical teams who use AI agents with community or third-party MCP servers and want to verify what they install before running it in their work environment. An enterprise offering also allows security teams to monitor the entire fleet continuously via the Snyk Evo platform.
The tool is not suited for users who have no MCP servers or skills installed, nor for those looking for a graphical interface: it works exclusively from the command line.
