What it does, concretely

Reading a scientific publication is not enough to know whether its conclusions hold: other works published since may confirm, contradict, or simply mention them. Scite addresses this problem by analysing the context of each citation rather than merely counting them.

The platform uses natural language processing and deep learning to extract and classify citations from millions of full-text articles. Each citation is labelled as 'supporting', 'contrasting', or 'mentioning' the cited publication. Users can therefore see at a glance whether a study is well supported or contested by subsequent literature.

Scite is aimed at researchers, PhD students, authors, and peer reviewers who need to verify the reliability of a source before relying on it or citing it in their own work. The platform covers journal articles, preprints, patents, clinical trials, and grant data.

Scite is not designed for general public use or for searches outside the academic field. Students looking for a free reference manager or people unfamiliar with scientific literature will find little immediate value in it.

What it offers

  • ·Smart Citations: each citation is automatically classified as 'supporting', 'contrasting', or 'mentioning' the cited publication, using a deep learning model.
  • ·Full-text search across a database of over one billion citations from articles, preprints, patents, clinical trials, and grants (paid).
  • ·AI Assistant: ask questions in plain language and receive answers grounded in scientific literature, with links to the exact source sentences (paid).
  • ·Reference Check: upload a manuscript PDF to instantly verify whether your references have been retracted, corrected, or contradicted (paid).
  • ·Custom dashboards: monitor a set of articles and receive email alerts for new citations or editorial notices (paid).
  • ·Browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge): displays Smart Citation badges directly on article pages read online.
  • ·Zotero plugin: shows supporting, contrasting, and mentioning citation counts for each article directly inside the Zotero library.
  • ·MCP integration: connects Scite to compatible AI assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Copilot to access Smart Citations from within those tools.
