Readwise Reader
Tool : standalone product, used directly
All-in-one read-it-later app (articles, PDFs, newsletters) with the Ghostreader assistant.
The best for serious reading and annotation, paid.
What it does, concretely
Many readers accumulate articles, PDFs, newsletters and threads without ever finding time to read them, scattered across multiple apps. Readwise Reader centralises all these formats in one place, built from the ground up for readers who want to genuinely benefit from what they read.
In practice, you save content from the web via a browser extension, import PDFs or EPUBs by drag and drop, and subscribe to RSS feeds and newsletters directly inside the app. You can highlight text, images and tables, add notes, and retrieve any passage through full-text search, even offline.
The Ghostreader assistant, powered by GPT, lets you ask questions about a document, define a term or simplify a complex passage without leaving your reading. All your annotations automatically sync with Readwise, which exports them to Obsidian, Notion, Roam Research, Evernote, Logseq and other note-taking tools.
Reader is aimed at avid readers, researchers, professionals and students who want to turn their reading into lasting knowledge. It will suit less well someone who simply wants to occasionally save an article with no intention of annotating or reviewing their reading.
