What it does, concretely

AI agents struggle to interact with online stores in a structured way: product search, cart building, and checkout require merchant-specific integrations. Shopify's agent tools solve this by exposing the entire buyer journey through the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and UCP-compliant MCP servers.

In practice, a developer installs the UCP CLI and the Shopify plugin for their environment (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, or Antigravity CLI), then gets structured commands to search products in the global Shopify catalog, build carts, generate checkout links, and track orders in real time via webhooks or the get_order tool.

These tools target developers building AI agents that act on behalf of buyers: conversational shopping assistants, order-tracking agents, or automated purchasing experiences. The Universal Cart API, which lets agents collect items from multiple merchants into a single cart, is still in early access with a waitlist.

This is not a tool for end buyers or for merchants who simply want to manage their store. Agents with a high trust tier can complete purchases directly, which places significant responsibility on the developer for validation and security.
