Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

Building an AI agent capable of acting on your business systems requires connecting the language model to concrete actions: sending an email, querying a database, calling an API. n8n tool nodes solve this problem by exposing any node from the n8n catalogue directly as a tool usable by an agent.

In practice, within an n8n workflow, you add an agent node and then attach one or more existing nodes to it as tools. The agent can then decide, based on the conversation context, to call these nodes to complete a task. The credentials configured on each node determine the effective access rights.

This approach targets technical teams and developers who want to automate complex business processes while retaining control over their infrastructure, particularly through n8n's open-source self-hosted option.

However, users without experience in automation or visual workflows will find the learning curve steep. The solution is not designed for general public use without technical support.

What it offers

  • ·Expose any n8n node as a tool directly usable by an AI agent.
  • ·Compatibility with multiple language model providers: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others.
  • ·Add memory and multiple tools within a single agent workflow.
  • ·Combine several AI models in one workflow.
  • ·Per-node credential management to control access rights for each tool.
  • ·Support for MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers to extend agent capabilities.
  • ·Open-source self-hosting available to keep data on your own infrastructure.

How to install Nœuds outils n8n

1. Install n8n self-hosted (open source) or create an account on n8n cloud. 2. Create a new workflow and add an AI agent node. 3. Configure the desired language model provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc.) with its credentials. 4. Add the nodes you want to expose as tools and attach them to the agent node. 5. Configure each tool node's credentials applying the principle of least privilege. 6. Test the workflow in preview mode before activating it in production.
