Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

Developers lose time switching between their team messaging tool and their development environment. Codex app for Slack solves this by letting you delegate coding tasks directly from a Slack channel or thread, without changing context.

In practice, you simply mention @Codex in a Slack thread with a description of the task. Codex reads the thread history, automatically selects the right repository and associated cloud environment, runs the task remotely, then replies in the thread with a link to the result. From that link, you can merge the changes, keep iterating, or pull the work down to your local machine.

This tool is aimed at engineering teams who already spend their day in Slack and want to hand off repetitive or well-defined tasks to an agent: fixing bugs reported in a thread, exploring a new feature, cleaning up technical debt. A connected GitHub account and at least one configured cloud environment are required, along with a paid ChatGPT plan.

Codex app for Slack is not designed for non-technical profiles or for use cases without a code repository: it is a coding-task launcher, not a general-purpose Slack assistant. Users on an API-only plan (without a ChatGPT subscription) do not have access to the Slack integration.

What it offers

  • ·Mention @Codex in any Slack channel or thread to launch a cloud coding task without leaving Slack. (paid)
  • ·Automatic thread context reading: Codex uses the message history to understand the request without you needing to restate information.
  • ·Automatic selection of the cloud environment and GitHub repository based on the conversation context. (paid)
  • ·Reply in the thread with a link to the completed task in Codex cloud, allowing you to review the diff, merge, or continue locally. (paid)
  • ·Ability to manually specify a repository or environment directly in the message, for example: @Codex fix the above in openai/codex.
  • ·Admin control for Enterprise plans: option to disable posting answers in the thread and send only a link to the chat. (paid)
  • ·Administration dashboard with environment controls, monitoring, and analytics to manage Codex at workspace scale. (paid)

How to install Codex app for Slack

1. Confirm you have a ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu plan, a connected GitHub account, and at least one cloud environment configured in Codex. 2. Go to Codex settings on chatgpt.com and install the Slack app for your workspace. 3. If your Slack workspace requires it, a Slack admin must approve the installation before proceeding. 4. Add @Codex to a Slack channel; if you have not done so yet, Slack will prompt you automatically on the first mention. 5. Mention @Codex in a thread or channel with your request; Codex reacts (👀), creates a cloud task, and replies with a link to the result. 6. Security note: Codex reads the entire thread and acts on the connected repository; always review diffs before merging, and restrict channel access to relevant team members.
