Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

When Claude Code analyzes a project, it needs to read files, search for text in code, and locate files by name or extension. The Read, Grep, and Glob tools address these three needs without ever modifying anything on disk.

Read retrieves the contents of one or more files. Grep searches for patterns within file contents, similar to an advanced text search. Glob locates files based on name or path patterns, for example all files ending in .ts within a given folder. All three tools operate in read-only mode and do not prompt for confirmation for paths inside the working directory.

These tools are intended for anyone using Claude Code to explore, understand, or audit an existing project. They are especially useful when first navigating an unfamiliar repository, to quickly find a function, a variable, or a configuration file.

They are not suited for those who need to modify files or run commands: for that, other tools such as Edit, Write, or Bash are required, but those tools ask for explicit confirmation before acting.

What it offers

  • ·Read retrieves the contents of files present in the project or on the local file system.
  • ·Grep searches for text patterns or regular expressions within the contents of project files.
  • ·Glob locates files based on name or path patterns, such as *.json or src/**/*.ts.
  • ·None of the three tools prompt for confirmation for paths inside the current working directory.
  • ·All three tools prompt for confirmation if the target path is outside the working directory or in an additional directory not yet authorized.
  • ·Permission rules apply using the Read(path/**) syntax and simultaneously cover Read, Grep, and Glob for the same path.
  • ·A deny rule on Read(path/**) also blocks the Edit and Write tools on that same path.

How to install Read, Grep, Glob (Claude Code)

1. Install Claude Code following the standard procedure. 2. Open your Claude Code settings (configuration file or /permissions interface). 3. To allow Read, Grep, and Glob across the entire project, add Read(**) to permissions.allow. 4. To block access to a sensitive folder, add Read(~/secrets/**) to permissions.deny. 5. On macOS, Linux, or WSL, verify that Glob and Grep are explicitly enabled in your configuration, as they are absent by default. 6. No separate installation is required: these tools are included in Claude Code.
permissions.allow: ["Read","Grep","Glob"]
