Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

When Claude Code needs to modify code or create new files, it relies on two distinct tools: Edit for making targeted changes to an existing file, and Write for creating or fully overwriting a file. These tools address the practical need to let the AI intervene directly in the project's file system, without manual copy-pasting.

Edit makes precise changes to specific parts of a file, while Write creates or replaces a file in its entirety. Both tools require your confirmation in manual mode, meaning every write remains visible before it is applied. In auto mode (Pro, Max, and Team plans), a classifier may decide on your behalf for certain actions.

These tools are aimed at developers who want to delegate repetitive or complex editing tasks to Claude Code while keeping control over what is actually written to their project. They operate exclusively within the project's working directory, unless explicitly configured otherwise.

These tools are not suitable for those who prefer that the AI never touches their files directly, or who work on projects where every change must go through an external review process.

What it offers

  • ·Edit makes targeted changes to existing files without rewriting the entire content.
  • ·Write creates a new file or fully overwrites an existing one.
  • ·Both tools require confirmation in manual mode before any write to the project directory.
  • ·Permission rules allow restricting Edit and Write to specific paths using the Edit(/src/**) format.
  • ·An Edit(...) allow rule automatically grants read access to the same path, without needing a separate Read rule.
  • ·A Read(...) deny rule also blocks Edit and Write on the same path, including creating new files there.
  • ·In auto mode, a classifier may approve certain writes without manual intervention (Pro, Max, and Team plans).

How to install Edit, Write (Claude Code)

1. Edit and Write are built-in tools in Claude Code; no separate installation is required. 2. Open your project in Claude Code so the tools are available within the working directory. 3. To restrict allowed paths, add rules such as Edit(/path/**) in your permission settings. 4. To protect sensitive files, add a Read deny rule on the relevant paths: this also blocks Edit and Write. 5. Make sure you are working in manual mode if you want to approve each write before it is applied.
