Amazon Q Developer (Kiro)
Plugin : A set of capabilities installed into an AI application or a host · requires vscode
AWS coding assistant and agent, connected to Bedrock.
Most relevant if your infrastructure is on AWS.
Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.
What it does, concretely
Developers lose time searching for AWS documentation, writing unit tests, or fixing security vulnerabilities manually. Amazon Q Developer centralises these tasks inside the code editor or command line, without leaving the working environment.
The tool offers real-time code suggestions, an inline chat directly in the editor, and agentic capabilities: it can read and write files, generate diffs, run shell commands, and perform code reviews autonomously. It is also available in the AWS console, GitHub, GitLab, Microsoft Teams, and Slack.
Amazon Q Developer is primarily aimed at developers already working within the AWS ecosystem: cloud resource management, Java or .NET migration, building data pipelines or ML models. It is particularly useful for teams looking to automate repetitive tasks across the entire development lifecycle.
For projects unrelated to AWS, or for developers who prefer to keep their code strictly local, the tool is less suitable: code is sent to AWS servers for processing, and the free tier is limited to 50 agentic interactions per month. Note that IDE plugin support will end on 30 April 2027, with AWS directing users toward Kiro going forward.
