Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

When an AI agent generates code, running it directly on a local machine or production server carries serious risks: the code may be malicious, unstable, or simply unpredictable. E2B Code Interpreter solves this by providing isolated micro-virtual machines in the cloud, where code runs without ever touching the host environment.

In practice, you start a sandbox in a few lines using the Python or JavaScript SDK, send code to be executed, and retrieve the result. Each sandbox is a lightweight Linux machine created on demand, which you can pause to preserve its state (filesystem and memory) and resume later.

E2B is aimed at developers building AI agents capable of producing and executing code: data science assistants, automation tools, code generation pipelines. The tool is also accessible via an MCP server, making it compatible with agents that use this protocol.

However, E2B is not designed for general audiences without technical skills: you need to obtain an API key, integrate an SDK, and manage sandbox orchestration yourself. People without development experience will not be able to use it directly.

What it offers

  • ·Code execution in isolated Linux sandboxes created on demand in the cloud.
  • ·SDK available in Python and JavaScript/TypeScript to start and control sandboxes.
  • ·Sandbox pause and resume with filesystem and memory state preserved.
  • ·Code Interpreter API to execute code and retrieve results directly.
  • ·MCP protocol compatibility for integration into AI agents.
  • ·Desktop SDK to control a graphical Linux environment (mouse, keyboard, screenshots).
  • ·Self-hosting option for the infrastructure on AWS or Google Cloud via Terraform.

How to install E2B Code Interpreter

1. Sign up at e2b.dev to create an account and obtain your API key. 2. Retrieve your API key from the E2B dashboard under the « Keys » tab. 3. Set the environment variable E2B_API_KEY=e2b_*** without hardcoding it in your source code. 4. Install the SDK suited to your use case: pip install e2b-code-interpreter (Python) or npm i @e2b/code-interpreter (JavaScript/TypeScript). 5. Create a sandbox and execute code with sandbox.runCode() or sandbox.run_code(), then retrieve the result.
pip install e2b-code-interpreter
