What it does, concretely

Creating consistent, high-quality textures for 3D models is a time-consuming task that usually requires specialized software and image editing skills. Dream Textures integrates Stable Diffusion directly into Blender to generate textures, concept art, and background assets from a simple text prompt, without leaving the working environment.

The plugin installs like a standard Blender add-on. Once activated, it allows users to generate images from text prompts, project textures onto entire scenes using depth-to-image, retouch or extend existing images (inpainting and outpainting), and upscale results by 4x. All models run locally on the user's machine.

Dream Textures is aimed at 3D artists and content creators who already work in Blender and want to speed up their texturing workflow without relying on an online service. It also suits those concerned about the privacy of their creations, since no data is sent to an external server.

However, it is not suitable for users without a compatible GPU (CUDA or Apple Silicon) with at least 4 GB of VRAM, nor for those looking for a plug-and-play tool with no technical setup. Complete beginners in Blender will face a significant learning curve.

What it offers

  • ·Texture and image generation from a text prompt, directly within the Blender interface.
  • ·'Seamless' option to produce textures that tile perfectly with no visible seam.
  • ·Texture projection onto entire scenes using depth-to-image (Project Dream Texture).
  • ·Inpainting to fix areas of an image and convert existing textures into seamless ones automatically.
  • ·Outpainting to increase the size of an image by extending it in any direction.
  • ·AI upscaling to increase image resolution by 4x.
  • ·Dream Textures render engine with a node system to create complex effects and re-style animations.
  • ·Cloud processing via DreamStudio available for machines with unsupported hardware. (paid)

How to install Dream Textures (Blender)

1. Download the latest release of the plugin from the GitHub releases page (https://github.com/carson-katri/dream-textures/releases/latest). 2. In Blender, open 'Edit' then 'Preferences', go to the 'Add-ons' tab and click 'Install'. 3. Select the downloaded file and enable the add-on in the list. 4. On macOS only: if dependencies are blocked, open Terminal and run the xattr command provided in the README to remove the quarantine flag. 5. Verify that your GPU is compatible (CUDA or Apple Silicon, minimum 4 GB of VRAM) before running your first generation.
xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine ~/Library/Application\ Support/Blender/3.3/scripts/addons/dream_textures/.python_dependencies
