What it does, concretely
Finding a web page months after reading it, or keeping an article without relying on a third-party service that might shut down: that is the problem Obsidian Web Clipper aims to solve. The extension saves page content directly into your Obsidian vault as Markdown files that can be read offline.
In practice, you click the extension icon in your browser, choose a formatting template (article, recipe, film, academic paper, or a custom template), and the page is converted to Markdown and sent to the folder of your choice in Obsidian. You can also highlight passages directly on the page before clipping them. If you enable the Interpreter feature, a language model can automatically extract and structure specific data from the page, provided you supply your own API key.
The tool is aimed at people who already use Obsidian as a personal knowledge base and want to integrate web content into it in a lasting way. Typical users range from students archiving sources to people building a subject-specific reading list.
However, if you do not use Obsidian, or if you are looking for an online saving tool with automatic cross-device sync, this extension will not meet your needs: everything is stored locally, inside your Obsidian vault.
