computer_use (OpenAI)

Tool : A precise action the AI can call · requires openai-api

Control of a browser or system by the model.

Same verdict as with Anthropic: isolated VM, supervision required, never on a real workstation.

Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

Some tasks require interacting with a graphical interface: filling out a form, testing a user flow, or navigating an application. Computer use allows an OpenAI model to take control of a browser or virtual desktop to complete these actions on behalf of the user.

In practice, the model receives screenshots of the environment and returns either code (Python with PyAutoGUI, JavaScript with Playwright) or structured mouse and keyboard actions. The host application executes these instructions in an isolated environment, returns the result to the model, and the loop continues until the task is complete.

This tool is aimed at developers who want to automate interactions with graphical interfaces via the OpenAI API, for example for user flow testing or repetitive tasks in web or desktop applications.

It is not suitable for use on a real workstation without strict supervision: the model has write, execution, and network access, which represents a significant risk outside a controlled environment.

What it offers

  • ·Model control of a browser or virtual desktop through successive screenshots. (paid)
  • ·Execution of Python (PyAutoGUI) or JavaScript (Playwright) code in an environment that persists between calls. (paid)
  • ·Structured mouse and keyboard actions returned as an alternative to code execution. (paid)
  • ·Autonomous interaction loop: the model chains up to 20 turns to complete a task. (paid)
  • ·Sample app (CUA sample app) provided with predefined scenarios to test the integration locally. (paid)
  • ·Compatibility with existing UI tools via function calling or remote MCP. (paid)

How to install computer_use (OpenAI)

1. Ensure you have access to the OpenAI API with a paid account. 2. Prepare an isolated environment (virtual machine or sandbox): never run on a real workstation without supervision. 3. Clone the CUA sample app and follow the README instructions for your chosen implementation (JavaScript/Playwright or Python/PyAutoGUI). 4. Set your OpenAI API key in the environment. 5. Choose a built-in scenario, run a test, and inspect the actions, screenshots, and final state before any production use.
