GitHub Copilot CLI
Plugin : A set of capabilities installed into an AI application or a host · requires cli
Copilot agent in the terminal, with built-in GitHub MCP integration.
Practical for existing Copilot users; still young.
Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.
What it does, concretely
Constantly switching between the terminal and a web interface to get coding help is a daily source of friction for developers. GitHub Copilot CLI solves this by integrating an AI assistant directly into the command line, with no context switching required.
In practice, you run the copilot command inside your project folder and interact with the agent using natural language. It can read your code, plan complex tasks, execute commands, and edit files, but only after your explicit approval at each step. GitHub's MCP server is included by default, giving you access to your repositories, issues, and pull requests directly from the terminal.
The tool is aimed at developers who already have an active GitHub Copilot subscription and work primarily from the command line on Linux, macOS, or Windows. It is particularly suited to those who want to delegate debugging, refactoring, or code comprehension tasks without leaving their terminal.
It is not suitable for users without an active Copilot subscription, or for those whose organization has disabled the feature at the enterprise settings level. Users who are not comfortable with the terminal will find other Copilot interfaces more appropriate.
What it offers
- ·Natural language interaction directly in the terminal to build, debug, and understand code.
- ·Built-in access to your GitHub repositories, issues, and pull requests via the MCP server included by default.
- ·Explicit approval required before any command execution or file modification.
- ·Language Server Protocol (LSP) support for richer code intelligence depending on the language in use.
- ·Choice of language model via the /model command, with Claude Sonnet 4.5 as default and GPT-5 available.
- ·Experimental Autopilot mode that lets the agent continue working until a task is completed without interruption (feature in development).
- ·Authentication via your existing GitHub account or a fine-grained personal access token (PAT) with the 'Copilot Requests' permission.
- ·Support for custom MCP servers to extend agent capabilities beyond GitHub features.
