LocalAI

App : A product you use directly

Self-hosted OpenAI-compatible API covering text, image, audio and embeddings.

A solid cloud API replacement for a home server, but more technical than Ollama.

Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

Running an AI model on your own hardware usually means juggling Python environments, incompatible dependencies and proprietary APIs. LocalAI solves this by exposing an OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama and ElevenLabs compatible API directly on your machine, without sending any data to an external server.

In practice, LocalAI is installed via Docker with a single command. It automatically detects your hardware (CPU, NVIDIA, AMD, Intel GPU or Apple Silicon) and downloads only the engines your models require: llama.cpp for text, whisper.cpp for transcription, stable-diffusion for images, and so on. Models can be loaded from a built-in gallery, from Hugging Face, or from the Ollama registry.

LocalAI is aimed at developers and system administrators who want to replace a cloud API call with local inference, at teams handling sensitive data that cannot be sent to the cloud, and at advanced users who want to run multiple modalities (text, voice, image, video) behind a single endpoint.

On the other hand, LocalAI is not suited to beginners looking for a simple chat interface: the initial setup remains technical, and Ollama will be more accessible for basic personal use. Distributed mode and multi-user management also require solid infrastructure knowledge.

What it offers

  • ·OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama and ElevenLabs compatible API: a simple URL change is enough to redirect an existing client to LocalAI.
  • ·Multi-modal support: text generation, speech synthesis and recognition, image and video generation, embeddings, all behind a single endpoint.
  • ·Modular architecture: each engine (llama.cpp, vLLM, whisper.cpp, stable-diffusion, MLX...) is pulled on demand as a separate image, keeping the base install lightweight.
  • ·Broad hardware compatibility: x86_64 and ARM64 CPUs, NVIDIA (CUDA), AMD (ROCm), Intel (oneAPI), Apple Silicon (Metal) and Vulkan GPUs, with no GPU required.
  • ·Built-in autonomous agents: tool calling, RAG with source citations, MCP support and shell command execution behind a user approval gate.
  • ·Multi-user mode with API key authentication, per-user quotas and role-based access control.
  • ·Distributed mode with VRAM-aware smart routing, autoscaling and node failover.
  • ·Gallery of 1,255 one-click models, including 201 APEX quantizations optimized by the LocalAI team.

How to install LocalAI

1. Make sure Docker is installed and running on your machine. 2. Choose the command matching your hardware: CPU only, NVIDIA GPU (CUDA 12 or 13), AMD (ROCm), Intel (oneAPI) or Vulkan. 3. Start the container with the appropriate command, for example for CPU: docker run -ti --name local-ai -p 8080:8080 localai/localai:latest. 4. Once the container is running, load a model from the gallery: local-ai run llama-3.2-1b-instruct:q4_k_m. 5. Point your existing OpenAI client to http://localhost:8080: no other changes are needed. 6. For subsequent starts, use docker start -i local-ai to avoid recreating the container.
docker run -ti --name local-ai -p 8080:8080 localai/localai:latest
