What it does, concretely

Running a language model on your own computer usually requires installing several dependencies, configuring a Python environment, and managing configuration files. KoboldCpp solves this problem by offering a single executable, with no installation required, that includes everything needed to run GGUF-format models directly on your local machine.

In practice, the user downloads a single file, loads a GGUF model obtained from platforms such as Hugging Face, and then accesses a web interface on port 5001 of their machine. The software is built on llama.cpp and supports GPU acceleration via CUDA or Vulkan, with the ability to distribute model layers between the CPU and GPU depending on available memory.

KoboldCpp goes well beyond simple text generation: it includes image generation (Stable Diffusion, Flux, SDXL), video generation, speech recognition and synthesis, music generation, and image recognition. It also exposes APIs compatible with OpenAI, Ollama, ComfyUI, and other popular services.

This tool is aimed at people who want to write stories, engage in text-based roleplay, or experiment with language models locally without sending their data to a third-party service. It also suits advanced users who want to connect their own applications via standard APIs. However, it is not suited to beginners looking for a fully turnkey experience with no configuration, nor to those who do not already have a GGUF model available.

What it offers

  • ·Single executable with no installation or external dependencies, available for Windows, Linux, and macOS.
  • ·Text generation compatible with all GGUF and GGML models, with backwards compatibility for all past models.
  • ·Image generation via Stable Diffusion 1.5, SDXL, SD3, Flux, and other integrated engines.
  • ·Speech-To-Text via Whisper and Text-To-Speech via multiple engines including Kokoro and Qwen3TTS.
  • ·Integrated video generation (WAN 2.2) and music generation (Ace Step 1.5).
  • ·Built-in KoboldAI Lite interface with chat, adventure, instruct, and story writer modes, plus support for Tavern character cards.
  • ·APIs compatible with OpenAI, Ollama, ComfyUI, A1111/Forge, Whisper, and other services, enabling third-party application integration.
  • ·Partial or full GPU acceleration via CUDA (Nvidia) or Vulkan (any GPU), with layer distribution between CPU and GPU.

How to install KoboldCpp

1. Go to the official releases page: github.com/LostRuins/koboldcpp/releases (never download from koboldcpp.com, which is a phishing site). 2. Download the file for your system: koboldcpp.exe for Windows, koboldcpp-linux-x64 for Linux, koboldcpp-mac-arm64 for macOS on Apple Silicon. 3. On Linux and macOS, make the file executable with the command: chmod +x koboldcpp-linux-x64 (or your file name). 4. Download a GGUF-format model from Hugging Face (for example Qwen3-VL-8B for general use). 5. Launch the executable, load your model via the graphical interface, adjust the number of GPU Layers for your hardware, then connect to http://localhost:5001.
curl -fLo koboldcpp https://github.com/LostRuins/koboldcpp/releases/latest/download/koboldcpp-linux-x64-oldpc && chmod +x koboldcpp
