GPT4All
App : A product you use directly
Local public chat client by Nomic, with document discussion support.
A historic and simple tool, but overtaken by LM Studio and Jan in 2026.
Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.
What it does, concretely
Most conversational AI tools send your data to remote servers. GPT4All addresses this by running language models directly on your computer, with no internet connection required and no data leaving your machine.
The application installs like any standard software on Windows, macOS, or Linux. It then downloads your chosen models locally and lets you chat with them through a chat interface. The LocalDocs feature lets you query your own files (PDFs, text documents, etc.) privately. GPU acceleration is available via Vulkan for NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards.
GPT4All is aimed at developers, teams, and users who want full control over their data, want to test different open-source models, or simply want an AI assistant without a subscription or permanent internet connection. A Python API is also available for integrating models into custom scripts.
However, the tool is less suited to people looking for a polished, turnkey experience with the latest models or a refined interface: alternatives such as LM Studio or Jan have caught up with and surpassed GPT4All on these aspects by 2026.
