Security reflects where data goes, requested permissions and incidents on record at the verification date. It is not a guarantee of zero risk: check the deployment mode and the connections you enable.

What it does, concretely

Managing important documents while preserving their confidentiality is a common challenge: cloud solutions send your files to third-party servers, while local tools often require advanced technical skills. AnythingLLM addresses this by offering an all-in-one application that runs directly on your computer, with no account creation or mandatory API key.

In practice, you import your documents (PDF, DOCX, TXT and many other formats) into workspaces. The application indexes them in a local vector database, and you can then ask questions in natural language and receive sourced answers. You freely choose which language model to use: a local model via Ollama or LM Studio, or a cloud model such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or Mistral.

AnythingLLM is aimed at individuals who want to query their own documents without sending data to the cloud, at small teams looking to deploy a shared internal assistant, and at curious users who want to explore AI agents without writing code. The Docker version adds multi-user management with per-person permissions.

On the other hand, the tool is less suited to those looking for a fully hosted turnkey solution with zero configuration, or to teams needing very specific business integrations without going through the developer API.

What it offers

  • ·Chat with your local documents (PDF, DOCX, TXT, etc.) with source citations in responses.
  • ·Free choice of language model: local (Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp) or cloud (OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, Gemini, DeepSeek, and many others).
  • ·Built-in AI agents capable of browsing the web and executing automated tasks, with a no-code agent flow builder.
  • ·Dynamic routing of conversations to the most suitable model based on rules you define.
  • ·Scheduled recurring tasks (cron) with full agent capabilities.
  • ·MCP (Model Context Protocol) compatibility and a full developer API for custom integrations.
  • ·Automatic meeting transcription and summarization, entirely on-device, with no bot joining your call.
  • ·Multi-user support with per-person permissions (Docker version only).

How to install AnythingLLM

1. Go to anythingllm.com/download and download the file for your system (macOS, Windows, or Linux). 2. Run the installer: no additional dependencies are required. 3. On first launch, choose your language model (local or cloud); if you opt for a local model, no API key is needed. 4. Import your documents into a workspace using drag and drop. 5. Security note: if you connect a cloud provider, your documents leave your device and are processed by that provider; prefer a local model for sensitive files.
