In practice, you describe what you want in natural language within the Copilot pane, and the tool generates formulas, creates pivot tables, highlights trends, or suggests calculated columns. It relies on the data present in your workbook, stored on OneDrive or SharePoint.
Copilot in Excel is aimed at Microsoft 365 users who regularly work with spreadsheets and want to move faster without learning new syntax. It suits analysts as well as managers who produce recurring reports.
However, it is not suitable for people without an active Microsoft 365 subscription, or for those whose data is not hosted on OneDrive or SharePoint, as access to local files remains limited.
