What it does, concretely
Recreating an object or a location in three dimensions from simple photos used to require expensive equipment and specialized expertise. RealityScan solves this problem by offering a photogrammetry solution accessible from a smartphone or a Windows PC, free of charge for individuals and small organizations.
In practice, the user photographs an object or environment from multiple angles, and the application processes those images to generate a high-fidelity 3D model. On mobile, processing happens server-side; on Windows PC, it runs locally, meaning data does not leave the machine.
RealityScan is aimed at game developers, film and TV professionals, geospatial and simulation teams, architects, educators, and curious users who want to digitize objects or places without a dedicated budget. The free version covers all features for annual revenues below one million dollars, and for educational institutions with no revenue limits.
However, companies with annual revenues exceeding one million dollars must purchase a paid per-seat license. The tool is not designed for purely recreational use with no interest in 3D, and the PC version requires prior installation of the Epic Games Launcher as well as an Epic account.
