What it does, concretely

Manually subtitling a video is time-consuming and often requires online tools that send your audio files to remote servers. AutoSubs addresses this by generating subtitles directly on your machine, with no internet connection required and no data leaving your computer.

The tool works as a standalone application or as a plugin integrated into DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, and After Effects. It uses several downloadable local transcription models (Whisper, Moonshine, Parakeet, Cohere, among others) available through a built-in Model Manager, and also offers automatic speaker identification in the audio (diarization).

AutoSubs is aimed at video editors working in DaVinci Resolve or Adobe Premiere Pro, content creators concerned about the privacy of their recordings, and anyone needing subtitles in more than 100 languages without a subscription or recurring fees.

However, users who want a fully online solution without local installation, or those using the Mac App Store version of DaVinci Resolve (which is not supported), will need to look elsewhere.

Our tips

For English content, prefer Whisper model variants ending in '.en': they are slightly more accurate on English audio than their multilingual equivalents.
If you are working with Russian content, the GigaAM v3 model (trained on 700,000 hours of Russian speech) offers the highest accuracy for that language.
The Mac App Store version of DaVinci Resolve is not compatible with AutoSubs: download Resolve directly from the Blackmagic Design website for the integration to work.
In DaVinci Resolve, access the plugin via Workspace > Scripts > AutoSubs, then send styled subtitles back to your timeline after editing speakers.
The forced-alignment module weights (Meta's MMS) are licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0: their use is restricted to non-commercial purposes.

Watch out

The version of DaVinci Resolve distributed via the Mac App Store is not supported: Resolve must be downloaded from the official Blackmagic Design website.
The most accurate models (Whisper large-v3, Cohere) require up to 10 GB and 4 GB of RAM respectively, which may exclude less powerful machines.

How to install AutoSubs (DaVinci)

1. Go to the AutoSubs GitHub page and download the installer for your system (Windows .exe, macOS .pkg, Linux .deb or .rpm). 2. On macOS, you can also use Homebrew: brew install --cask auto-subs 3. Run the installer and follow the instructions; no internet connection is required for transcription once models are downloaded. 4. For DaVinci Resolve integration, open Resolve and go to Workspace > Scripts > AutoSubs (make sure you are using the version downloaded from blackmagicdesign.com, not the Mac App Store version). 5. On first launch, open the built-in Model Manager to download the transcription model(s) of your choice. 6. All data stays on your machine: no audio file is sent to a remote server.
