Anthropic has announced the launch of its Life Sciences Verification Program, a mechanism aimed at biomedical organizations and researchers who want to use Claude for sensitive scientific work. The announcement itself offers few technical details, but the name and context point to an identity and institutional legitimacy verification process, allowing authenticated users to access model capabilities that are normally restricted for safety reasons.

The move addresses a familiar challenge for generative AI labs: certain topics in biology, virology, and chemistry carry dual-use risk, being valuable for legitimate research while also posing potential danger if misused. Models like Claude typically apply default restrictions in these areas, which can slow down researchers working in good faith on vaccines, treatments, or diagnostics.
